Resumo. The metal contamination in areas that received municipal solid waste (MSW) is a serious environmental problem facing today. This study evaluated the content and distribution of heavy metals nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in different depths in the old disposal area of MSW, called “Aterro Invernadinha”, which is located in the city of Passo Fundo, RS. The methodology of the study was based on therealization of boreholes, sampling of soil in different depths (0-1 m, 1-2 m and 2-3 m) and analysis of metals usingthe method 3050B, the quantification of the levels of metals in the study was performed by atomic absorptionspectroscopy with flame. Thereafter, there was statistical and geostatistical unidirectional horizontal to Cu, Zn andCr, using the software GSLIB and VarioWin. The same method of collection and processing of data was performedin a control area, free of contamination, located near of the old landfill (Reserva Arlindo Haas). The results showhigh levels of metals in the soil covering (0-1 m) and a large variability in the data area of the landfill. Geostatisticsis a powerful tool for studying the distribution of spatial data and to conclude that there is contamination by Zn inall the course, while for Cu and Cr is punctual and random.
