Resumo. This study deals with the performance of Cedrela odorata L. (cedar) seedlings planted in gaps created by reduced impact logging, in the municipality of Paragominas, state of Pará, Brazil. The survival and growth rates of seedlings were evaluated in order to find out the possibility of planting them in gaps caused by the reduced impact logging in the Brazilian Amazonia. Four hundred gaps were chosen in 200 ha and they were divided in three size classes: small (200-400 m2), medium (401-600 m2) and large gaps (> 600 m2). Four hundred and seventy seedlings of cedar were planted in 236 gaps in 2005, when the first assessment was carried out. Other assessments occurred in 2006, 2008 and 2010. Five years after planting the survival of seedlings was circa 81,8% and the mean growth rate was 70,0 cm year-1 in height and 0.23 cm year-1 in diameter. Therefore, we can suggest Cedrela odorata L. for enrichment planting in forests after logging, considering its good performance in gaps. Continuous monitoring is needed.
